After vanquishing Ukraine and then Poland in successive Summer Universiade editions, the Russian team goes for the student-athlete world tournament three-peat in Gwangju. Led by towering hitter Ilia Vlasov, who podium earlier that summer at the European Games, and FIVB U21 world champ Ilyas Kurkaev, the Russians match up once again against Ukraine.
Standing in their way is Dmytro Teryomenko and company, with the latter going on to help his Ukrainian club team Lokomotyv Kharkiv to nine (!) national championships.
